Marriage & Adding a Spouse to a Lease
Getting married does not automatically approve a spouse to live in the community or add them to the lease. Before moving into the home, all adult occupants, including spouses, must complete the full application and screening process and receive approval in accordance with the governing documents and occupancy requirements.
I got married. Does my spouse automatically get added to my lease?
No. Marriage does not automatically add someone to the lease or approve them to live in the community. All adults over the age of 18 must complete the standard application and approval process before moving into the home, including spouses.
Does my spouse need to apply even if we are legally married?
Yes. Every adult occupant must submit an application and be approved according to the community’s governing documents and screening requirements.
Can my spouse move in before approval is complete?
No. Approval must be completed before the new household member moves into the home. Until then, they must comply with the guest rules outlined in your communities rules.
How does my spouse apply?
Applications can be completed online here.
What happens after the application is submitted?
Management and/or the Board will review the application, complete any required screening, and notify the household once a decision has been made.
Will the lease need to be updated?
If approved, yes. Once approved, lease and household records will be updated to include the new resident.
What if my spouse has changed their last name?
Legal documentation for any name change may be required before records can be updated.
What happens if an adult moves in without approval?
If an adult occupant moves into the home before approval is completed, the community may need to begin enforcement procedures required by the governing documents. In many cases, this can be resolved quickly by contacting management and completing the application process as soon as possible.
Are children handled the same way?
Not always. Rules regarding children may vary by community, especially in 55+ communities where occupancy restrictions may apply. Please contact management before making any household changes involving children.
